Indonesia’s Sriwijaya Air plane lost contact after taking off from Jakarta

Flight Sriwijaya SJY 182 from Jakarta to Pontianak lost contact at 2:40 PM ET (2:40 AM ET) on Saturday, according to the state-run Antara News Agency.

Sriwijaya Airlines said in a statement that it is „in contact with various parties concerned to obtain more detailed information” regarding the accident and that it will „issue an official statement immediately” when more information becomes clear.

Flight SJY 182 lost contact 11 nautical miles north of Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 11,000 feet while climbing to 13,000 feet, Antara reported.

The plane landed 10,000 feet in less than a minute before disappearing from radar, according to global flight tracking service Flightradar24. She added that the landing occurred four minutes after takeoff.

Kahionu said the Indonesian search and rescue agency, Pasarnas, had sent a ship to the Thousand Islands – a chain of islands north of Jakarta’s coast – to verify the location where it suspected the plane had lost contact.

The Transportation Ministry said it is investigating and coordinating with Pasarnas and the National Transportation Safety Commission.

The registered aircraft PK CLC is a Boeing 737-500. The aircraft is 26 years old, according to Flightradar24.

A Boeing spokesman told CNN in a statement that they are „aware of the media reports from Jakarta, and are monitoring the situation closely.”

„We are working to collect more information,” they said.

This is a developing story … more to come
